Information
The Office of the Rentalsman operates within the Department of Justice and is unique in that it is one of the few alternative dispute mechanisms provided by the provincial government. Appointed to carry out duties prescribed by The Residential Tenancies Act, the Rentalsman provides an alternative dispute resolution program outside of the traditional court process for resolution of certain landlord tenant disputes and the administration of security deposits.
The Rentalsmen are responsible for informing the public about tenancy matters and receiving complaints from landlords or tenants. They may conduct investigations and inspections. In addition, the Rentalsman can mediate or arbitrate complaints by both landlords and tenants regarding breach of a tenancy agreement or failure to adhere to The Residential Tenancies Act.
